96 flights to and from Charleroi were canceled this weekend due to a strike by Ryanair pilots in Belgium over an ongoing disagreement on working conditions, according to the airport, in the midst of the busy summer travel season.

According to the airport’s management, 17,000 passengers—or about 28% of the anticipated number of travelers—are scheduled to depart from or arrive in the southern city during the time of the strike.

Pilots claim that a collective agreement that sets time off in exchange for salary reductions agreed upon in 2020 during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, which ravaged the sector, is not being upheld by the low-cost Irish carrier.

The company, according to the pilots’ union, violates Belgian law and thrives by engaging in “social dumping,” which puts other airlines that follow the laws in an unfair competitive situation.

Prior to this, Ryanair urged the pilots to engage in negotiations as opposed to going on strike and mentioned that it had struck agreements on working conditions with its Italian, French, and Spanish employees.

According to the airline, non-Belgian pilots fly more than half of Ryanair’s flights out of Charleroi.

During the previous strike weekend on July 15 and 16, 120 flights to and from Charleroi were canceled.
