Colonel Chinyere Obi, a retired army officer, claims that the Labour Party abandoned her after an incident during the election in which she allegedly suffered a gunshot wound.

Before the election, the former soldier became well-known for allegedly selling her property and using the proceeds to back Peter Obi, the nominee of the Labour Party.

The former military commander joined the Labour Party and actively supported the former governor of Anambra State. During the State Assembly election in her community, Dike-Nafa, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, she was shot in the leg.

The retired Colonel recalled her ordeal in an interview with Opagnews and expressed regret over being spurned by the group in spite of all the sacrifices she made before to the shooting incident.

It was a traumatic experience, she added. I had backed Peter Obi. I gave a lot of sacrifices throughout the campaign, but when the Labour Party was attacked, my polling place was deserted.

Obi recalled how she was shot by some thugs while attempting to stop Labour Party members from being coerced into voting for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I attended the poll in my community in Imo State’s Ideato South Local Government Area. I went to my voting location, Ward 1, on the day of the House of Assembly election to cast my ballot.

“Somehow, I saw something wasn’t right; whenever someone tried to vote for the Labour Party, an INEC official present would grab his hand and make sure they cast their ballots for the APC instead.

“So I instructed them to let everyone cast a free vote. Later, I stepped in to stop some thugs from bashing the LP agent present. Then a man came up to me and claimed to have seen me in the neighborhood.

He claimed that I was busy marketing the LP and that they had observed how I handed people rice. He pulled a revolver from his backpack and shot at my leg without my knowledge. I went to the police station when I was feeling better,” the former military officer recalled.

Obi claims that the Labour Party abandoned her.

The elderly woman continued by recounting her direct participation in Labour Party campaigns.

She asserted that Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, is not unfamiliar with her and that she frequently updated him on her efforts during the campaigns.

Obi also described how, after the National Chairman turned down her plea for financial support, she voluntarily used her money to fund some election-related activities.

“Like I told you, I was often stopping by the office and actively participating in the campaigns. Abure is quite familiar with me. I invested my time and money into the training, and I have documentation that everyone was aware of my effort.

When the finances ran out, I approached Abure for help and explained that we needed additional money to take care of the Arewa visitors, but he declined. “Even when I hosted the Arewa people, I financed it,” the host remarked.

To rally support for Obi, I traveled everywhere in my area, stopping at every market and giving away T-shirts, bags, and food. However, they abandoned me when this problem arose. I called a news conference because they didn’t respond to me,” she continued.
