President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has been advised to proceed cautiously with his intervention as diplomatic tension continues to rise in the Niger Republic following the coup d’etat that ousted previous President Mohamed Bazoum. President Tinubu of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been speaking out strongly and threatening military action against the new junta.

The presidential guard of the nation’s president removed Bazoum, making it the sixth successful coup to be documented in West Africa since August 2020. Bazoum, who assumed office on April 2, 2021, was overthrown, according to Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane. According to The Whistler, President Tinubu, who also serves as the chair of ECOWAS, cautioned the junta that “the world will not tolerate any situation that incapacitates the democratically-elected government” of the Niger Republic in his initial response.

The leaders of ECOWAS then convened an emergency meeting on Sunday in Abuja, where they decided to invade Niger Republic violently in order to reestablish democratic rule there. The junta reportedly declared that it was immediately halting the export of uranium and gold to France in response to the threat. France is thought to be responsible for 24% of all uranium exports to the EU. President Tinubu has been cautioned not to “allow himself to be pushed to initiate and trigger a war with a neighboring country and later be left stranded” by Shehu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna State’s Kaduna Central Senatorial District.

If a battle breaks out, he claims that Russia might support Niger Republic against Nigeria. Sani listed the following thirteen arguments in a tweet to convince Tinubu to choose discussion over using force to solve the issue.

  1. Due to our proximity, the armed invasion of the Niger Republic by Ecowas amounts to a conflict between Nigeria and Niger.
  2. Wagner and Russia Nigeria may decide to assist the Niger Republic, but to carry out the operation, it will need to pay for it out of its own pocket.
