An official accusation alleging that Zambia’s head coach Bruce Mwape s3xually assaulted a player at the Women’s World Cup is being looked into by Fifa.

Mwape is accused of touching one of his players’ chests while they were in New Zealand for a training session on July 29.

“A complaint has been received,” a Fifa representative stated.

Nevertheless, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) claimed that “it has not received any such complaint” and that it is a “surprise”.

Two days prior to Zambia’s last group match against Costa Rica, which they won 3-1 for their first World Cup triumph, the alleged event is believed to have occurred during a training session.

The spokesperson for Fifa further stated, “Fifa takes any allegations of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process in place for anyone in football who wants to report an incident.”

After placing third in Group C, Zambia was eliminated and has since gone home.

The FAZ stated, “All the Copper Queens [Zambia] training sessions were filmed by the FAZ media team and offers no such footage.”

A Fifa film crew belonging to the Zambian World Cup team was also present at every training session.

“However, we want to reassure the public that FAZ upholds the strictest integrity and transparency standards and consistently expects steadfast ethical conduct from players and officials both on and off the field of play.

Therefore, “we would not hesitate to take disciplinary measures and act on any misconduct once we are in receipt of an official complaint or when presented with evidence pertaining to an alleged incident.”

A representative for the New Zealand police stated, “We were made aware of an alleged incident and after making initial enquiries, no further action was required to be taken.”

Last year, claims of s3xual abuse against Mwape, who assumed leadership in 2018, surfaced on social media. The FAZ added that “we consider these allegations very serious” while stating that it had not yet received an official complaint.

At the World Cup, Mwape was questioned numerous times over the claims, but he said they were “fake” and denied any wrongdoing.
