Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization, claims that the purpose of her meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja was to ease the economic misery that Nigerians are currently experiencing.

After the meeting, Okonjo-Iweala spoke with journalists and emphasized that her “quiet visit,” which was not a WTO-sponsored mission, was centered on how to help Nigerians in need.

We are all aware of how difficult life is for Nigerians living abroad; everyone is having difficulty. I’m here by myself, having a peaceful visit.

During Tinubu's visit

We were able to speak with Mr. President about what kinds of programs may be implemented to ensure that the hardship of Nigerians is addressed, so this wasn’t really an official WTO mission.

The head of the WTO revealed that she had “a really good conversation” with Tinubu during which they discussed community and grassroots initiatives that might be implemented to benefit women and children, whom she emphasized were the most vulnerable, while also creating jobs for young people.

She recalled that they had talked about the value of long-term investment potential for Nigeria, especially those in the pharmaceutical sector.

The World Trade Organization’s support capabilities were also discussed, according to Okonjo-Iweala.

“We’re already working in Nigeria with women, in particular, who run small and medium-sized businesses to try to help them improve the quality of their goods, whether it’s in the agricultural sector, the textile industry, or other areas so they can sell more internationally.”

The economic expert also made a suggestion that there might be interventions in the domain of digital trade, which she called the future’s wave.

How can we educate, empower, and support Nigerian women and small- and medium-sized business owners so they may expand their trade and generate more jobs? Helping Nigerians to improve their precarious circumstances is what is required right now, she continued.
