The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off the statewide strike they started to pressure the Federal Government (FG) into meeting their demands.

Emeka Orji, the president of NARD, informed reporters on Friday evening that the strike had been called off and that resident doctors would start working again on Saturday at 8 a.m.

“We’ve just called off the strike. The start of work tomorrow is 8 AM. In two weeks, we shall assess our improvement, according to Orji.

Recall that on July 26, the association went on an indefinite strike in protest at the government’s refusal to comply with its members’ demands.

The consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS) and the one-for-one replacement circular, as well as an upward evaluation of the money for medical residency training in 2023, are some of the demands.

Others include making good on consequential adjustment arrears, as well as hazard and skipping allowance.

Following the strike, the Federal Government (FG) announced that it had authorized the payment of an accoutrement allowance of N25,000 each quarter to medical and dental doctors working in federal public hospitals, clinics, and medical facilities.

Additionally, they agreed to a CONMESS (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) rise of 25%.

NARD, however, disapproved of the allowance and wage raise, calling it “paltry.”

In conclusion, the association declared that its members would stage peaceful nationwide protests beginning on August 9, but FG postponed the planned demonstration after meeting with the association’s leadership.
