Sokoto House of Assembly has moved forward with a bill that would severely limit the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III’s authority.

The first and second readings of the proposed legislation have been enacted, and it would mandate that the sultan have government consent before designating kingmakers and district chiefs.

This event follows claims made by the Muslim Rights Concern that Ahmed Aliyu, the governor of Sokoto State, allegedly hatched a scheme to overthrow the sultan.

The bill would significantly alter the state’s power structure if it were to become law.

According to a Monday story by Opagnews, MURIC issued a warning after Governor Ahmed Aliyu deposed fifteen traditional rulers for a variety of offenses. The statement was made by the organization’s executive director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola.

Akintola stated in the statement that Muslims in Nigeria are against any kind of plan against the Sultan.

In addition, Vice President Kashim Shettima urged the Sokoto State administration to guarantee Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, his safety and security, emphasizing the need of preserving his stature as a respected leader and a symbol of national unity.

Shettima acknowledged the Sultan’s important role in fostering peace and stability in the nation while speaking at the North West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State. She emphasized the need for caution and steps to protect the Sultan’s well-being.

In the meantime, the Sokoto State Government denied any preparations to remove Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, calling the reports completely untrue.

Sambo Danchadi, the state’s commissioner of information, claims that no changes have been made to the regulations that currently regulate the appointment of traditional rulers in the state.

The goal of the government’s response is to allay worries and give the public confidence that the monarch’s position was safe.
