Risks of alum vaginal tightness, say gynecologists

The experts stressed that using alum to wash the vagina cannot restore lost virginity in their exclusive talks with Opagnews Health.
Alum is an inorganic chemical substance that often consists of sulfates, aluminum or other metals, and water molecules.
According to Dr. Uche Agu, an associate professor and consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu State, the practice is a misconception held by some women who believe using alum to wash their vagina will make it tight and give them a sense of virginity.
He emphasized that virginity is a state of consciousness and that a ruptured or broken hymen cannot be repaired by washing the vagina with alum.
According to Dr. Agu,
“some women believe that using alum to clean their vagina will make them feel tight and virginal. Yet because it has no real meaning, it is only a myth and a lie.
Because alum can be corrosive and cause some burning and irritation of the vaginal wall, it is quite harmful.
Moreover, it may result in scarring and possibly severely obstruct or constrict the area, necessitating surgical treatments to widen the vaginal.
That is, therefore, a really bad habit. It is harmful rather than being helpful. When you apply that chemical to the vagina, infection may develop by the time it burns and erodes the vaginal walls.
Future infertility could result from the infection spreading to the uterus.”
He claims that an infection that could result from bathing the vagina with an alum can clog the fallopian tubes and result in infertility.
The gynecologist additionally cautioned that should the woman manage to conceive, such a dangerous treatment might result in pregnancy difficulties.
“It will be challenging for a baby to pass via a small canal if the lady finally becomes pregnant and the vagina is restricted.”
